HOW TO FIND YOUR PULMONOLOGIST

A pulmonologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the lungs and the respiratory system. Pulmonologists treat diseases such as lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, etc. and is a specialist in the field of IPF. Not only can/ will the pulmonologist diagnose IPF he can also put you in touch with the Hospitals, Research Centers who are specialized in IPF.

Ask your primary care physician immediately who he recommends as a pulmonologist. He knows you and the pulmonologists in the area that are highly respected and taking new patients in their practices and who could be a good match with your personality.

1. If any of your family or friends has seen a pulmonologist ask them about their experiences. They may be able to point you in the right direction towards finding a doctor.
2. Contact your insurance company. Most insurance companies have listings of doctors and specialists on their websites and when you have found a pulmonologist you can see if he participates in your insurance.
3. Still didn’t fin one! Browse the web for websites listing pulmonologists in your area. Here’s a good example: www.wellness.com/find/pulmonologist Search by name, if you have someone in mind. Search for a physician by city, state or zip code. Websites usually give you contact information and office locations. You can Google that information to research if that office has a website. That way you get more familiar with the office and know exactly which pulmonologist you need to make the appointment with.
4. If you want more official websites you can search the websites for the American Board of Medical Specialties ( www.abms.org ) and the American Board of Internal Medicine ( www.abim.org ) for a board certified pulmonologist.
5. If you want to you can check out pulmonologist reviews online. For instance: www.ratemds.com These websites provide reviews and comments from former and current patients. Keep in mind that both the very positive and very negative may not give you a clear picture of his professional abilities and most of the time speak more about “personal impressions”.
